Introduction
Welcome to Altered Book Projects Class
For me there is something magical and mystical about finding an old used and well loved worn book on a dusty shelf. There is a sense of mystery about its past, what type of people read them etc.
This course will give you a combination of great ideas, interesting techniques and a big spoonful of inspiration. It will also give you the confidence to create something really unique and truly wonderful. One of the most important things I tried to keep in mind when designing this course is that i wanted you to be able to create books using your own style rather than copying. I have given you lots of tips, techniques and ideas to really create altered books which are uniquely you and not me. My techniques and ideas are designed to stimulate your creativity not inhibit it!

Things to remember
- Before you begin, reflect a little about what you want to create. Write down ideas, draw diagrams, cut out images you like.
- Ask yourself what type of book do you want to create. Do you want to create something personal, a book of your art, symbolism, poems and thoughts. Remember you don't have to fill it all up just for the course, it might take you several months to complete it so give yourself permission to take your time to enjoy the creating process.
Things to keep in mind when choosing a book to alter.
- Look for books which are unique, worn and weathered. Have a sense of history (scratches, dents, marks, scribbles etc) and look old and loved.
- Books which have ornate and embossed patterns as well as interesting fonts and texts are also great to use.
- Consider the size and thickness (You may want to start small and work up to a larger book).
